TobesVerse Review

TobesVerse visit notes and Toby's own ride verdicts will be added after a future visit/interview.

Alton Towers is the UK's most visited theme park, set within the grounds of the historic Alton Towers estate in Staffordshire across 500 acres of landscaped grounds. The park contains Nemesis, widely regarded as one of the finest roller coasters in Europe, The Smiler which holds the world record for most inversions on a roller coaster, Oblivion the world's first vertical drop coaster, and over 50 attractions in total. The setting surrounding the ruins of the original Alton Towers house gives it an atmosphere unlike any other theme park in the UK.

Nemesis

112cm Thrill ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Inverted coaster in Forbidden Valley, originally 1994, extensively refurbished 2024 with new trains and theming. Built into a deep pit of excavated rock through four inversions at high speed. Consistently ranked among the best roller coasters in Europe. The signature attraction of Alton Towers. Height: 112cm.

The Smiler

140cm Thrill ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Steel coaster holding the world record for most inversions at 14. Sustained series of loops and corkscrews in a compact layout, intense and physically demanding. Disturbing yellow smiley face aesthetic throughout. Height: 140cm.

Oblivion

140cm Thrill ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The world's first vertical drop coaster, opened 1998. Riders held stationary at the top facing directly downward into a dark tunnel before near-vertical drop at 65mph. The deliberate pause at the top is the defining feature. Height: 140cm.

Wicker Man

120cm Thrill ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Wooden coaster with integrated fire effects system, first wooden coaster at a major UK park in over two decades on opening in 2018. Folk horror theme with practical fire effects at multiple points. Characteristically different feel to steel coasters. Height: 120cm.

FAQs

By most measures, yes. The most extensive ride lineup, the most impressive collection of headline coasters, the largest site and arguably the most iconic individual attractions of any UK theme park. Nemesis alone is considered one of the finest roller coasters in Europe.

What is the best ride at Alton Towers?

Nemesis is the signature attraction and widely regarded as one of the best coasters in Europe. The Smiler holds the world record for inversions. Oblivion was the world's first vertical drop coaster.
